The Grave of Beatosu-sama

Beatos comes from the Portuguese word ‘Beato’ which means ‘blessed.’ Hidden Christians in Urakami had respected one family as Beatos-sama for long time. The family had been devout Christians and had not renounced their faith, even after being arrested by Nagasaki government authorities. In the end they were burnt at the stake to warn other Christians. Their dead bodies were buried in Toono-o (present day Hashiguchi-machi). The place where the family was martyred has since been treated as a sacred place.
