Lourdes in Komine

The Lourdes Grotto is in a residential area.

Once day, Monk Joseph Iwanaga placed a small image of the Virgin Mary at the bottom of a steep slope in Mihara-machi Nonaka(present day Komine). He was really surprised that the image remained in the same position after two years. Celebrating the miracle, he decided to build the Lourdes Grotto to heal people’s spiritual and physical wounds from the atomic bomb. There was a spring of water. In 1954 URAKAWA Kenichi completed the construction of the Lourdes in Komine designed by Monk Joseph Iwanaga.
