Cross Mountain (designated a place of pilgrimage by the Pope)

In September 1881, Cross Mountain was made by Father Puthod and local Christians in Urakami, to atone for having trampled on the Fumie, to extend to the governmental authorities the offer of God’s forgiveness, to thank God for the end to the long persecution and to proclaim their Christian faith.

Sixty men transported the large heavy stone for the base of the cross from the quarry in Motohara to the top of the mountain. It took 7 days.

In 1950, Cross Mountain was designated a formal place of pilgrimage by Pope Pius XII when Nagasaki’s Bishop YAMAGUCHI Aijiro visited Rome.
